FUTURE OF BIM DESIGN APPLICATIONS
UX Design Research / Done in: 2016 / Part of Masters Thesis Project
What is BIM now?
Building information modeling (BIM) is a new way of approaching the design and documentation of building projects.
- Building – the entire lifecycle of the building is considered (design/build/operations)
- Information – Managing all information about the building and its lifecycle
- Modeling – defining and simulating the building, its delivery, and operation

Existing Platforms & designing BIM Manager
1. Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD (also owned by Nemetschek) is the oldest BIM design tools still available
2. Bentely’s MicroStation focuses on a wide range of solutions for AEC industries
3. Autodesk’s Revit Architecture is one of the most widely used BIM tools for architectural design
Nemetschek North America’s Vectorworks has a small, but growing, market share in the U.S
Risks & deficiencies of BIM
Lack of an intuitive GUI design for designers
Compatibility between Software Platforms
Cost of Software and Hardware for applying bim + Cost of Training
Bold bounding approach for creative design
Early sketches
Proposed solutions, Improving the next generation of BIM tools
- Combining basic parametric design with sketching tools
- A tree database structure of every model
Integrated workflow - Turning scripting and programing into visual programing platforms
- File format integration
- Lack of role management in BIM
- BIM Construction Costs can be solved by creating an online database
- Implementation of integrated Communication system
- Using VR as input device to increase creativity
- Integration with old platforms and renovation
